Perhaps you cuddled a cloth doll when you were growing up. Hugging and sleeping with a doll that is not porcelain or plastic is comfortable and reassuring. Since cloth dolls are almost weightless, children can toll them around easily. How many of you had a Raggedy Ann or Andy doll? One hundred years ago, Johnny Gruelle sat in Indianapolis, Indiana and rendered a cloth doll for his daughter, Marcella. Because he wanted her to know that she was always loved, he put a heart on the chest of the doll. In the center of the heart were the words, “I love you.” That doll was Raggedy Ann. Yes, Raggedy Ann is one-hundred-years-old and her friend, Raggedy Andy is ninety-five. Raggedy Ann has an important place in the history of Indiana and doll history. Both Raggedy Ann and Andy are still being produced. Not many cloth dolls are nowadays. Most are some form of plastic.
