Are extroverts more happy than introverts? Can being the center of attention bring happiness? Maybe. If that is what a person needs they may find that story-telling, even stretching the truth, can bring that attention necessary. Hence the sense of brief happiness and satisfaction. But sometimes the extrovert can hurt others when the limelight tarnishes another human being. Introverts may be the most happy. Think of Thoreau on Walden Pond. Or Anne Dillard at Tinker Creek. Both have felt a spiritual connection to nature with peaceful bliss a benefit. However, being an introvert doesn’t mean that one is connected to the natural world. There are numerous types of introverts and extroverts—both happy and unhappy. Just how does one go about finding happiness? Simple answer: lower your expectations. At the University College in London, researchers developed a mathematical formula that could predict the rise and fall of people’s happiness. The equation shows that we are at our happiest when “events exceed our expectations.”
I am in disagreement with this answer to an extent. For instance, what are we saying to our children unless we as parents have reasonably high expectations for them? Expectations, for sure, need to be realistic. But not caring or having any expectations for loved ones might create more harm than good. It exhibits a lack of regard, of concern. What are you saying to another person if you do not care what they say or do? Could it be that having low expectations of others might lower your own self esteem? Hey, this is tricky business, trying to find happiness. Sometimes you think you have happiness, then poof, your expectations are denigrated. It’s a fine balancing act, this happiness/expectations game. Now where is that app? Have a New Year full of happiness and great expectations. Romans 12:13 “Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother’s way.” NEV [email protected] © Copyright Ann Rains, Dec.2014
