Earth Day falls on Sunday this year. It was said by John Scotus (810-877) that “Christ wears ‘two shoes’ in the world: scripture and nature. Both are necessary to understand the Lord, and at no stage can creation be seen as a separation of things from God.” Disintegration to creation I do not believe God had in mind. Perhaps you did not notice that 15,000 high temperature records were broken in the United States during March. Maybe you are too young to realize that the epidemic of tornadoes happening with greater frequency in our country is a manifestation of abnormal weather--close to 300 tornadoes in the first three months of 2012. Perhaps you think that the four feet of hail that fell in Texas panhandle could never happen here. No coruscation led to the realization that change is rapidly occurring. We have received fair warning for more than three decades by scientists, such as Carl Sagan. Scientists who understood what the continued burning of fossil fuels would bring. We were warned that glaciers, Arctic and Antarctic ice would melt, that severe heavy rain storms would precipitate floods in some places while other areas would have extreme and decade-long droughts. We were warned that the oceans would rise along with the temperatures. Image via stokpic of Pixabay. Click here to visit their gallery. Environmental responsibility belongs to each one of us. We can talk about what needs to be done but unless we are willing to take it one step farther and try to meet that need, we are talking through our hats.
For some of us, changing to meet the needs of the planet while still surviving and meeting the needs of one's self and family, is life altering. Now, with the economy is crisis, many of us have no choice but to alter habits, not necessarily as responsibility to the planet, but for the sake of having enough money to purchase groceries and drive to work. It is a good time to begin planting as many perennial food sources as possible in your yard. Rhubarb has beautiful large leaves and fits well in any flower garden as a backdrop. Asparagus, sorrel, Jerusalem artichokes, blackberries, blueberries are a few perennials easy to grow and each provides sustenance. Or, plant a tree. Daniel 4: 10-12 “…there was a tree at the center of the Earth and its height was great. The tree grew great and strong, its top reached to heaven…Its foliage was fresh, green and beautiful; its fruit abundant, and it provided food for all. The animals of the field found shade under it, the birds of the air nested in its branches, and from it all living beings were fed.” On this Sunday, this Earth Day, I will praise God for the Earth’s wondrous beauty and gifts from the land. There is a biblical basis for environmental stewardship. It is proclaimed in Psalm 104.
