This tiny tree frog has been on the deck all summer. Once I found him on the screen door before daylight, catching moths that hovered around the light. Frog has sticky pads on the ends of his toes that secrete a substance to help him climb and stick to vertical surfaces. Another time I had gone out after dark to put the dog on her line. I felt something cool and damp land on my leg. I looked down to see only a small smudge where whatever it was had landed on me. It was a creepy feeling until I realized it was probably Frog. The very next morning after the “leg landing”, as again I was preparing to put my dog outside, (Chey thinks that is my sole purpose in life), Frog jumped from my desk chair towards me. “Now, how did YOU get inside?” I asked as he landed at my feet. I scrambled to get Chey outside before Frog became an hor d’ oeuvre. Frog probably jumped from my leg to my shirt tail the evening before and spent the night in the house. Since the nights are getting cooler, Frog may be getting ready to go underground where he will eventually freeze. But, lucky little guy, his tissues and body fluids will not be harmed because his body’s cells produce a type of alcohol called glycerol. Carefully gathering up Frog, I put him under some leaves on the deck. Afterwards, I thought, “I didn’t kiss him!” Another opportunity lost. He was gone when I went back outside and I haven’t seen him since. He could have been Prince Charming! I found him lovely. “Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever it noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things. My frog is a frog that is hoplessly horse, my frog is a frog with a reason, of course, my frog is a frog that cannot croak a note, my frog is a frog with a frog in its throat. Since then, my wonderful companion, Cheyenne has passed on and I am blessed with two dogs adopted from the shelter. But I will never forget Frog and how he made me smile.
