One would think that they were busy enough without adding to their repertoire of responsibilities. But, like most of our own relatives, they opened their home and hearts to my friend, Claire, and I. Our “adopted family” is not without its sadness. Claire has Alzheimer’s disease and no longer knows me when I call. George and Shirley keep me updated on her condition. Last month, George and Shirley moved from the little village where we lived close, as the crow flies, for many years. They moved to be closer to their children. Both are now in their late 80’s. When the phone rang the other day and I heard the voices of George and Shirley, a wide smile and exclamation issued forth. I always recognize his gravelly voice and her infectious laugh. They still stay in contact and call on holidays and birthdays. Hearing their voices always brings happiness--touching my soul with love. And their embracing natures did not stop with Claire and I. George sent notes and nature photos to my Mother, calling her Mom. They are in contact with Claire’s children. What a rare and endearing couple. They have Christmas in their hearts all year long. How blessed I am to have been a stray and adopted by George and Shirley. Jesus adopted all of us as his children. George and Shirley pass it on. May your Christmas be filled with love and maybe a stray or two. [email protected] copyright©Ann Rains
