We humans tend to think that creation ended on the seventh day as told in Genesis. Life is not adjusted for eternity. Creation is continuing to happen. Recently discovered off the Eastern coast of Australia was a new species of shark. Two different species of sharks interbred. One species of shark was not adapted to temperate waters. It interbred with a shark that could withstand warmer waters. The result is a stronger shark. There is much speculation by scientists about this being a consequence of global warming. Perhaps that is true. Loren Eiseley, anthropologist and naturalist, talks about Crossopterygian, nicknamed the Snout in his book, The Immense Journey. Snout was a fish living three hundred million years ago that came out a stagnated, shrinking pool of water to clump its way across land to deeper waters. Survival. I read Eiseley’s books in the early 60‘s. I am rereading them now. They are prophetic, profound tomes and may have shaped my thinking in ways I have yet to understand. He talks of the “careful finger of God” and the role it plays in this continuing creation. Man’s reign on Earth has been rather short. Hominids, or human-like species were discovered to have been here 4.4 million years ago. Compare that with the dinosaurs who ruled the planet for over 180 million years. Of course, man has not remained the same over the course of the last four million years. His brain is larger and he walks upright. Nor did the dinosaurs remain the same in their lengthy rule. Tyrannosaurus became extinct along with many other humongous dinosaurs. While smaller dinosaurs became prevalent. It is difficult to see creation happening if the process takes thousand of years. That is why the new shark species is a revelation. There’s more going on out there than we realize. I remember a dentist telling me that he was seeing canine and eye teeth missing in patients. Since we are no longer tearing tough meat from the bones of wild animals, perhaps the body is ridding itself of unnecessary parts. Processed food doesn‘t demand much chewing. Could it be possible that in a few thousand years (or less) infants will not develop teeth at all? Frogs don’t have teeth. There is a mystery to life. That it continues with so much adversity against it is amazing. What does creation have in store for man? Will the “careful finger of God” guide us? “See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them.”
