“Can you spell that?” I asked my niece, Karen, when she used the word. “E-A-R-T-H-I-N-G”, she replied. That was enough to set me off on another research adventure. Earthing is another word for “grounding” and it has to do with humans being grounded to the Earth by going barefoot or using implements that achieve the same purpose. Why would anyone want to go barefoot when there are creepy crawlies in the grass? Wasps, night-crawlers who forget it is not night, salamanders and snakes—all inhabit my grassy lawn. However, there is mounting scientific evidence from at least 20 different studies that substantiates the health benefits of going barefoot outside. You see, the human body is a conductive instrument. Since we are constantly being exposed to the positive charges of cell phones, computers, as well as the surrounding wiring in our homes and places of work, our bodies may have a build up of positive charges of electromagnetic particles or electrons. It is very likely that we have unrecognized electron deficiencies. The Earth’s surface is affected electrically in its own natural way. Solar radiation, lightning strikes and “atmospheric dynamics”, provide our water and land with a “supply of subatomic particles called free electrons that give the Earth a natural negative electrical charge. Humans are positive and the ground is negative. What does that tell you? “Earthing appears to correct what we call an electron deficiency syndrome, an overlooked and likely significant cause of multiple health disorders.” When bare feet or any other part of a bare human body touch the ground or water, Earth’s free electrons are transferred through the skin. No other electrons have more powerful antioxidants. “By scavenging and neutralizing free radicals in the body, antioxidants help to ease inflammation”… and help heal a body with other physiological problems. The list of benefits one can receive by going barefoot or using a mechanical device to ground oneself is lengthy. If one is elderly (or not) it is suggested that sitting in a lawn chair with bare feet on the ground for 20 to 40 minutes per day will maintain the best benefits of electron transferral. I am wondering if all the bug spray I put on my feet and ankles hinders that transferral? Also, sitting for 20 minutes or more is a long time to sit (at least for me!). Having some reading material handy is a good idea. Or, maybe I can go barefoot while shopping around town! I see no signs that say, “No Bare Feet”! Here is a partial benefit list: Improves vagal tone Harmonization and stabilization of the body’s biological rhythms Reduction of high blood pressure and improved blood flow Rapid healing of injuries Improved sleep Improved digestion Improved immune function Reduces inflammation Pain reduction or elimination Helps alleviate depression and anxiety A more peaceful, calm mental state It’s time for some earthing. Excuse me while I take my shoes off and head out the back door. Or maybe I should take my shoes with me in case there are creepie crawlies about! By the way, going barefoot in the winter has the same benefits if you don’t lose your toes to frostbite first! My feet receiving Earth’s free electrons! [email protected] ©Ann Rains September, 2021
