Greta Thunberg gives a presentation on TEDTalks. It is an amazing talk giving the “disarming case to act right now on climate change” by a well educated and informed individual belying her age. I was amazed. As for those in doubt or even to those who are true believers, yes, yes, I hear you. You say that Earth’s climate has changed many times in eons past. Just part of Earth’s evolution. But never before has the climate changed with the rapidity with which it is happening now. The manifesting results are obvious and prevalent. If one wishes to prove to oneself or others the reality of these changes, check the number of tornadoes with the past year to the number of tornadoes in 1960. There were only 66 tornadoes in that year. Although 2019 has time left on the calendar, there have already been 1,042 confirmed tornadoes in the US. A rather staggering increase. We should have listened and acted on Carl Sagan’s words who warned us 30 years ago that extreme weather events would be one of the results of the massive increase of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. It is a rare quality in an individual to think and care about what happens beyond one’s own lifetime. Many have the attitude that they will no longer be around when the sea rises causing coastline erosion and evacuations inland. They don’t want to take the effort or time to do even small gestures to give our planet a chance.
Recycling comes to mind. Our natural resources are dangerously depleted. Recycling may eventually become a law. In the future, what we now can do voluntarily may become punishable by law if not done. What will our brave new world be like if/when our governments realize that global climate change is more of a threat to survival than war? A present day revelation of our leaders lack of understanding of GCC is the penalization put on owners of electric or hybrid vehicles. I drive an eight year old Prius. Last year, expecting car registration fees to lessen, I was puzzled to find that they had increased. Apparently, if one drives a vehicle built to use little or no gasoline, one has to pay a fee for doing so. Many states are searching for ways to fund highway infrastructures. Do SUV’s, trucks and other large vehicles have extra fees on the yearly registration fee? Providence has provided well for humans but humans have not returned the favor. Is it not time that each of us find some way to give back to nature? Maybe it is just riding a bike more or planting a tree. It is our choices that are impacting the climate. Please listen to our youth, especially Greta’s plea. We need to remember that the world is God’s creation. Genesis 1:31, “God saw everything that He had made, and indeed, it was very good…” It is important that we acknowledge that we are a part of God’s created order, not separate from it. We are called by God to be caretakers of creation. (Genesis 2:4-8,15) Are we taking actions to lessen the global climate crisis? Are you a believer? [email protected] ©Ann Rains, October, 2019

Hi Ann,

Yes, Vicki, walking the walk is the effective way to show others and possibly, in my own case, to make me feel as if I am doing something helpful and worthwhile. I fear what may happen before politicians finally wake up to the fact of GCC's effects.

Onandaga Chief, Oren Lyons, says that in the law of nature there is no habeas corpus. Nature's law punishes those who do not obey it. That is a very prophetic statement. As you know, the earth has over 6 billion humans on it. In 1950 there were just over 2 billion. In my lifetime we have tripled the population of our planet. The drastic effects of climate change will someday correct that imbalance. In the meantime, we have people like you and Chief Lyons spreading the good word and doing the good work. I know you and you live what you preach. A good piece, Ann. The little girl reminds me of someone I know.

Hi Dan, it is always good to receive your comments. What I wish for the world is kindness. In a degenerating society the best example we can give to children and each other is living with abiding kindness. Much easier said than done when evil is constantly knocking on one's door.
