Everything with which this planet is composed was here in elemental form billions of years ago. Minerals and vitamins in the soil of Earth began as cosmic dust. So did we. Each of us is a resurrection of millions of years of life that has died and come to life again. We are a derivative of Earth.
Reading Mahatma Gandhi creates introspection: “Nature can satisfy all of our needs but none of our greeds.” We have become greedy souls with little thought of what we are doing to our planet.
But we have surmounted and overcome extreme adversity in the past. Victory gardens helped us survive World War I and II. Knowing that the worldwide average temperatures for the past twelve months have been higher than any in the past should awaken us to the dire dangers our children will inherit from us. Yet I believe the preponderance of people would rather live a life of hope, love, generosity, and compassion than a life of violence, fear, hate and ruthless competition. And to have hope for the future, one must also take action to aid and find kinship with Earth. As Thomas Berry wrote, “We are nature reflecting on itself.” Environmental apathy is curable!
