I had no idea why that left thumb was demanding attention but I gave it my Mother’s most trusted treatment. Vicks ointment was applied and covered with a bandage. I could feel it was doing something because the thumb began to throb.
This brought memories of the many times my Mother had applied Vicks to my chest when as a child I had bronchitis. She then placed a warm towel over the Vicks and pinned it behind my neck to hold it. Mother had warmed the towel by hanging it close to the coal stove. It must have worked because I am living proof, still being here.
This morning, after taking off the thumb bandage, I decided that a good Epsom Salts soak wouldn’t hurt. So I made coffee and heated water to soak my thumb. Since I didn’t want to put my entire hand into a tub of water, I decided to use a coffee cup.
With my cup of coffee in one hand and the cup of Epson Salts in the other, I put them on the table next to my chair and settled down to watch the morning news and soak the thumb. The heat on the thumb felt good and seemed to be helping. I soaked the thumb for quite a while and finally reached for my coffee.
That’s when I noticed that I had been soaking my thumb in the cup of coffee instead of the cup of Epsom Salts. Now, I am not practicing medicine, but that thumb is not half as sore as it has been. Not to mention that I had one of the best laughs I have had in ages. And no, I did not drink the Vicks laced cup of coffee or the lukewarm Epson Salts solution.
