Three Little Words

There are very few three word sentences in the English language that flood the heart with such love and anticipation. No, it isn’t “I love you,” although those words have front stage at this time of year with Valentine’s Day close. And they are important words. But the words of which I speak are, “I’m coming home.”

So many families with loved ones who live or work far away, and especially those who have family serving in the military, hunger to hear those three little words. When we hear them, it is as if the love in our hearts will explode. Excitement and anticipation, preparation and joy take hold.

Sometimes we are transported to memories and visions—-the time last spent together, the jokes and laughter—remembering.

There are numerous songs about the subject. “Mama, I’m Coming Home” by Ozzie Osbourne, “I’m Coming Home to You,” by Christina Marie.

Once you deviate from the three words, the “coming home” list becomes overwhelming. The hymn, “Lord, I’m Coming Home,” by William J. Kirkpatrick is one of many “home” hymns.

There is are books and poetry with the same subject. Messages like lines feeding into our souls, all about coming home.

Home extension groups recite a creed at each meeting. The ending of the creed says, “and endearing the greatest institution in the world—THE HOME.”

When you think about it, it is. No other institution has the influence, the love, or the acceptance of you, with all your faults and frailties.

"I’m coming home,” conveys trust, love and forgiveness. Perfection is impossible in the relationships of a home. But if there is true love there, obstacles can be overcome and “I’m coming home” will remain three of the most important words that can be uttered or heard.

1 Corinthians 13:13 “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”  NIV

Maria,
A year ago you posted this lovely response to this article. How did I miss it? Could it be that I check my email so seldom? I hate to say it but Angelia can attest to my lack of email checking. It may have been put in spam. Thank you for your kind words.
