I like to think of our time on this planet as a basic training field for the hereafter. On Earth we learn compassion, sharing, unconditional love, forgiveness and gratefulness. We find joy and appreciation in the natural beauty of the land. We try to be helpful to those in need. We learn respect for what others hold dear—their homes, their families and even what parents have bequeathed to their children when they have departed this life.

There are people who have no such compunction. They do not see a hand made knife or a bequeathed ring from a mother as items which bring pleasure and memories each time used. Thieves see only an item which will bring them money or an adrenaline rush by just the act alone of being in a home uninvited and stealing.
Invading another person’s home or giving sanction for someone else to do so magnifies a basic lack of compassion. If the person is acquainted with the homeowner, it is complete disrespect. I truly lack the understanding of why anyone would find it, within their own mind, acceptable to do.
Maybe it is the excitement felt of “pulling the wool over his/her eyes.” Feeling that adrenaline rush, that “high”, can be additive. I remember what a wonderful feeling it was to ski down a mountain enveloped in a cloud of snow feeling as if I had wings. It is truly sad that misdirected, harmful utilization of adrenaline is prevalent in many. The manifestations are numerous and tragic.
I hope each of us will give ourselves time in this busy season of holidays for solitude and silence, for prayer and gratefulness. As our preparations and plans for Thanksgiving gather momentum let us keep a prayer in our hearts for goodness to grace us, for His light to guide us, for the delight of laughter to lighten the burdens of the day. Let that adrenaline rush be used for good.
As Pablo Casals said, “Each second we live is a new and unique moment in the universe, a moment that will never be again…” Do you think we should be taking this Earthly training field a little more seriously? Maybe there is a "cloud of witnesses."
