Could it be to try to get the spotlight off themselves and put the onus onto another? What are the intentions of the perpetrator who originates the gossip? Is there a hidden innuendo? How does one know that the mendacious gossip is being spread? The look of a dear and friendly acquaintance whose face drops briefly into a grim countenance, but manages to bring back a smile and speak, is a good indicator. That is a kind and compassionate person. The majority of people hearing gossip and accepting or believing the rumors will turn their heads, one of many social repercussions of gossip. Perhaps I am wrong but I think one should never be fearful of asking a person to explain gossip. Why do people avoid verification? If a person is truthful (and remember the power of truth) their answer will give understanding. The truth may be inconvenient for those whose agenda is based on deception, whose intentions are malevolent.
And as mentioned in the last article, keep your sense of humor! Think eternity.
