Back in the late 1980’s, while perusing the science magazine, Omni, I came upon an article entitled, “The Hidden Epidemic,” March, 1985. Dr. Orion Truss had discovered a relationship between antibiotics (which kill the good as well as the bad bacteria) and chronic gastro-intestinal problems. He was able to treat with success numerous ailments including autism, diagnosed schizophrenia and MS. The first article in this recent issue of Discover entitled, “Bacteria and the Brain”, discusses the millions of microbes in our intestines. Autism is presently being treated with fecal transplants. Whoa. Why do that when we have all the good microbes (probiotics) sitting on drugstore shelves? Not only that, people react and utilize the numerous biomes in their bodies in different ways. Each of our bodies is an individual universe. “Many children with autism have some type of gastrointestinal problem, which led researchers to search for links between the two.” The research has been good, finding links between inflammation of the bowels and leaky gut syndrome with unhealthy biomes.” The researchers are learning that specific probiotic organisms help maintain a healthy gut. Exactly what Dr. Orion Truss said 40 years ago. However, I am glad that studies are continuing.
Part of Dr. Orion Truss’s treatment was an extremely regimented diet. Nothing with sugar or yeast. That means no bread, crackers, cheese, beer, or anything else involving yeast or sugar. (Grapes are covered with yeast.) Diet is now becoming a part of mental health treatment due to these studies and the research presently being conducted, even though Truss was using a specified and rigorous diet years ago.
Your library probably carries Discover magazine. Both articles are full of information which could be helpful or even life saving to you or someone you know. If possible, find an issue of the March,1985 Omni magazine. Orion Truss’s research telling how to treat the gut and with what medications is really the start of it all…more than 40 years ago. And he used no fecal transplants. [email protected] ©Ann Rains, November, 2020
