What is bewildering to me is how this adoption agency continued to operate for so many years; from 1924, when Georgia Tann began child trafficking, to the 1950’s under the guise of the legality of the Tennessee Children’s Home Society. Georgia Tann used every method possible to obtain children. She often coerced parents into signing false documents releasing their children to her. If they objected, Tann would threaten legal action. She took children born to inmates of Tennessee mental institutions. When all else failed and demand for adoptions was high, she paid to have children kidnapped. Georgia Tann then used the children as chattel. “In some cases, single parents would drop their children off at nursery schools, only to be told that welfare agents had taken the children. In others, children would be temporarily placed in an orphanage because a family was experiencing illness or unemployment, only to find out later that the orphanage had adopted them out or had no record of the children ever being placed.” Wikipedia Neglect, abuse—both physical and sexual—and even the murder of “problem” children was the status quo of the Tennessee Children’s Home Society. It is thought that as many as 500 children who disappeared were murdered. Many were starved to death. None were provided with medical care.
It is a heart rending story, but no less than what we sometimes see on the news today of abused and neglected children. If a parent uses a child to assist in a crime, that is also abuse. Everyone needs to be more aware of what is happening to the children around us. Lisa Wingate’s book will encourage that.
And for all of us who love our children and are thankful for our time with them, this Bible verse is meaningful: “ I have no greater joy than to hear my children are walking in the truth.” 3 John 1:4 [email protected] ©Ann Rains, October, 2020 Dear Friends, I am only posting articles two times a month instead of every week. It's true! Reality is much more frightening, many times, than fiction. Even today.
